The Music Center and Disney Hall Guide

Everything here is grey, silver, and concrete, which means the two of you are the only saturated thing in the frame. A navy suit and an emerald satin gown separate from that steel instantly. It is also compact: the concert hall, the plaza, the garden, and the lobbies sit within a few minutes' walk of each other, so a two hour session can cover four completely different looks without anyone getting back in a car.

The stainless skin of the concert hall does two jobs. Where it is brushed it reads as a smooth graphite to pewter gradient that darkens toward the pavement, and that flat metal is the best close portrait backdrop in downtown Los Angeles. Where it is polished it becomes a mirror and hands you a second, warped copy of the two of you inside the same frame. Our favourite spot is the narrow channel where two curving walls lean together: it funnels a bright band of sky straight down the middle, so the light lands like a halo behind your heads and the converging seams build the composition for us.

Bright overcast is genuinely ideal here. The curved metal bounces a soft, almost directionless light, so faces carry no hard shadow edge and a white shirt still holds detail. In full sun the steel gets contrasty and the seams go harsh, so we work the shaded channels and the north sides. The upper terrace over the skyline is a low sun position where the towers go pale and hazy and the sky washes out, so we expose for faces and let the city sit soft behind. The rooftop garden railing facing City Hall is the warmer opposite, with late sun raking gold across the tower and clean blue above it.

The interiors swing hard to warm tungsten and are worth timing for. The backlit onyx wall, a slab of cream and amber stone covered in small gold lettering, is bright enough to work as its own softbox behind a full length pose, with a bar of crystal chandelier hanging above it. The grand staircase has brass handrails, chandeliers flaring overhead, and a bronze statue on the landing, and in December it gains an enormous decorated tree. The dark lounge with its leather chairs is the one corner where the ambient falls away within a few feet, so we bring our own light to it.

This is a public arts campus rather than a private venue, so plan around performances and load ins, and expect company on the plaza on matinee days. Commercial or organised photo shoots need permission from the venue, which we flag and arrange early. Weekday evenings are calmest, and we like to start in daylight on the steel and finish at blue hour on the stair, about two hours end to end. Wear something saturated. Grand Park, the Broad, and the Bradbury Building are all walkable if you want a second look.
