PLAN YOUR SESSION

The Engagement Session Guide

How to plan an engagement session you will love: timing around the light, choosing places that mean something to you, what to wear, and why five minutes of night portraits is always worth it.

Scheduling your session

Engagement sessions usually last one and a half to two hours around the wedding day, or a half or full day when done on a dedicated date. The best light starts about two hours before sunset, though we are flexible with timing, and night photography can be really incredible and unique. If you are planning to use the photographs for save the dates, schedule at least three months before the wedding; editing takes one to two weeks.

About the session

The session is a celebration of your love and your life together, and a chance to unlearn what posing for photographs usually feels like. We focus on capturing moments that tell your story, embrace individuality, and illustrate the love you share. It is also practice for the wedding day: we learn how you interact, and you learn what you love in photographs. The wedding day goes so much quicker and smoother when we all know what to expect of each other.

Where to shoot

Choose a location that reflects you both, ideally a mix of quirky and sentimental. Modern and minimal couples love city blocks and geometric architecture. Foodies pick markets and picnics. Readers pick bookstores and libraries. We are happy to scout locations with you, and some places need permits, which we will flag early.

What to wear and bring

Dress like yourselves, and save the formality for the wedding day. Primary colours like red and yellow play a big part in our photography and make you pop against the background. Keep it to three outfits at most so we spend the time shooting, wear comfortable walking shoes, and check for visible straps and tags. Carry as little as possible; purses and phones can stay in the car.

Night portraits

Five to ten minutes away from the reception is enough for dramatic, beautiful evening portraits. It is an ultra easy way to get photographs you will keep forever.

Make it yours

Confidence is everything in photographs, so wear what makes you feel amazing. When it gets right down to it, this is your session. Make it personal, make it about you, and above all else, have fun with it.
